Joshua Waks, NVS, RVT
My interest in complex cerebral hemodynamics started when I entered the medical field in 2011. The depth and nuance of cerebrovascular physiology, and the challenge of translating that physiology into meaningful diagnostic information is what initially drew me to neurosonology. Since 2017, I have been immersed in neurovascular ultrasound and have earned the Neurovascular Specialist (NVS) designation from the American Society of Neuroimaging.
My neurovascular career began in Seattle, at Harborview Medical Center, one of the country’s premier cerebrovascular programs. It was there that I gained a deep appreciation for why transcranial Doppler examinations are among the most technically demanding vascular ultrasound studies performed, and why mastering them requires time, repetition, and rigorous technical understanding.
The idea for NVL emerged after I was recruited to establish and build a transcranial Doppler program at the University of New Mexico Hospital. Within one year, the program became the first and only accredited TCD laboratory in the state, following the creation of standardized TCD protocols and criteria, training pathways, and the alignment of TCD-specific quality assurance within the laboratory’s existing accredited vascular framework.
Throughout my career, I’ve trained residents, fellows, attending physicians, vascular sonographers, and EEG technologists in the performance and interpretation of neurovascular ultrasound examinations. My work has included structured hands-on training, didactic education, and technical mentorship focused on diagnostic accuracy, consistency, and clinical reliability.
NVL Solutions represents the convergence of my passion for advanced neurovascular ultrasound exams and my commitment to education. The mission of the company is to support institutions and independent practices by strengthening technical foundations, standardizing performance and interpretation, and elevating the overall quality of neurodiagnostics that are delivered to patients and communities.
